Wind Cave

The longest cave in Romania with over 50 km of mapped galleries. Located in Crișului Negru gorge. Named for the strong air currents inside.

Scărișoara Ice Cave
Gârda de Sus, Alba
Contains one of the largest underground glaciers in the world, estimated at over 75,000 cubic meters. Has existed for at least 3,500 years. Located in the Apuseni Mountains.

Woman's Cave
Baia de Fier, Gorj
One of Romania's most important prehistoric caves. Rare 30,000-year-old human skull found here. Gallery length 3,539m. Named in local legend for a woman who sheltered inside.

Polovragi Cave
Polovragi, Gorj
Historic cave with a long section accessible on foot and a narrower inner section explored by specialist cavers. Associated with local legend of Zamolxe, the Dacian god. River runs through inner sections.

Ialomița Cave
Sinaia, Dâmbovița
Cave in Bucegi Mountains near a 14th century Orthodox hermitage. Accessible from Sinaia via marked trail. Impressive stalactites. Located in Ialomița river canyon.

Dâmbovicioara Cave

Small but impressive cave near Rucăr-Bran corridor. Located in Dâmbovicioara gorge. Known for beautiful stalagmites and historical shelter use.

Ciur-Izbuc Cave

Cave in Apuseni with important prehistoric finds including the oldest known human footprints in Romania (Paleolithic). Significant archaeological value.

Meziad Cave

Large cave with a very wide entrance gallery (over 30m wide). Well-known bat colony. Gallery length over 4,750m total. Located in Bihor, Apuseni foothills.

Coliboaia Cave

Discovered to contain Paleolithic cave paintings in 2009, among the oldest found in Central Europe (30,000–35,000 years old). Protected site with very restricted access.

Large cave system in Alba county traversed by an underground river. Approximately 10 km of galleries known. Has impressive underground waterfalls.

Ponor Fortress
Gârda de Sus, Alba
Spectacular cave system with three giant dolines (sinkholes) up to 70m deep and 110m wide. One of Romania's most impressive karst features. The cave continues underground for several kilometers.
Altitude: 900m

Living Fire Ice Cave
Albac, Bihor
Ice cave with a permanent glacier that glows amber and gold in sunlight, giving the impression of living fire. Smaller than Scărișoara but equally impressive. In Apuseni Mountains.

Contains the oldest Homo sapiens skeletal remains found in Europe (40,000 years old). Internationally significant archaeological site in Miniș valley. Access involves passing through an underwater sump.

Veterani Cave

Historically significant cave above the Danube in the Cazane gorge. Used as a fortification in the 17th–18th centuries by Romanian fighters. Viewable from the Danube River boat trips.

Onceasa Cave

Cave in the Bacău foothills area. Less visited than western Romanian caves but known locally. Part of the Subcarpathian cave belt in eastern Romania.

Gura Dobrogei Cave

Important Dobrogean cave with prehistoric human bones and Paleolithic tools found inside. Located near Gura Dobrogei village in the Dobrogea plateau's limestone karst area.

Cave in the southern Dobrogea karst, near the Black Sea coast. Contains archaeological deposits. One of the southernmost known cave sites in Romania.

Less-known cave in the Anina Mountains of Caraș-Severin. Part of the rich karst landscape of the Banat Mountains. Known to local cavers and hikers.

Bats Cave (Rimetea)

Cave near Rimetea (Torockó) village, known for its bat colony and proximity to Piatra Secuiului (Szekler's Stone) rock formation. The area is a nature reserve.
