What to Do Right Now
Select your crisis type to get immediate step-by-step guidance.
Radiation, detonation, or fallout
1
First 10 Minutes
- Move indoors immediately — any building is better than outside
- Go to the basement or center of a large building
- Close all windows, doors, and fireplace dampers
- Turn off fans, AC, and forced-air heating
- Shower with soap and water if you were outside — do not scrub skin
- Do not use conditioner — it binds radioactive particles to hair
2
First Hour
- Stay indoors and away from windows
- Listen to official emergency broadcasts
- Seal gaps around windows and doors with tape or damp cloth
- Do not eat or drink anything that may have been exposed
- If taking potassium iodide (KI), follow official dosing instructions only
- Prepare to shelter for at least 24 hours
3
First 24 Hours
- Continue sheltering — radiation levels drop significantly after 24 hours
- Use only sealed food and water supplies
- Monitor official communications for evacuation orders
- Avoid touching surfaces that may be contaminated
- Designate a bathroom as a decontamination area if people must come in
- Keep a log of symptoms for each person
4
Long-Term
- Follow evacuation routes when officially cleared
- Seek medical evaluation for radiation exposure symptoms
- Do not return home until authorities confirm safety
- Dispose of contaminated clothing and items as directed
- Support family and community mental health recovery
- Register with local emergency services for assistance
